 Counterweight

/ with Chantal McCormick & Naomhan Joyce (2023)

If you’re a first time flyer or an experienced technician this class will get you to grips with fundamental techniques in the harness as well and learning new and exciting moves to get your teeth into. Bring layers!

For the first few days this class will be structured around learning basic harness techniques, including front-flips, back-flips, summersaults in the air, working close to the ground, hand-stand dives etc.

We will be working both close to the ground as well as higher in the air. The vocabulary taught will be combined with guided improvised solos set to music, with experienced counter-weight technicians flying you. This class is suitable for dancers and aerialists and people with no aerial experience. For this class we will also work on learning about counterweighting, so if you ever wanted to be on the ladder seeing what it is like to fly people, now is your chance. If you have a favourite piece of music, please bring it with you for use on the final day.

Please wear multiple snug layers around your hips and waist for your comfort. If you have a bungee harness, please bring it with you and you can work in bare feet or soft shoes. We do a lot of spinning so bring the ginger if you don’t like it.

NOTE: This class will take place in the Aura for the first time. Don’t go to the theatre!

This class is not for first time counter-weighters. This class will allow the participant to learn a sequence of choreography as a flyer, Counterweighter or both. The Choreography between the flyer and counter-weighter will intertwine and will allow you to dance on the ladder as well as in the air. You should already have a good understanding of harness technique and movement as this will not be taught within this class.

You will be taught a short solo group sequences set to music. We will also spend time working in trios (one person flying and one person on the ground, with another person counter-weighting). It will begin as improvisation and then the class will work together to set a short sequence. Group improvisations are also included in the week.

We will be working both close to the ground as well as higher in the air. The vocabulary taught will be combined with guided solo and group improvisations as part of the exploration process.
