Oliver Smith-Wellnitz

Australian circus artist, ex-fruit-fly, and graduate of Ecole Nationale de Cirque, Oliver specialises in Double Bar Dance Trapeze and Hula Hoops. An artist, self-professed dork, and lifelong learner, Oliver strives to take his work seriously but not himself.

Oliver first discovered circus at The Flying Fruit Fly Circus in Albury, Australia. He trained there throughout his last years of high school with a focus on static trapeze and aerial silks. After graduating in 2009 he spent some time performing and teaching, eventually coming to work with A4 Circus Ensemble and their show DownPour, where he began to work with hula hoops. With a desire to continue his training Oliver moved to Montreal, Canada in early 2011, and ended up staying for the following five years. After spending four of those years at the prestigious Ecole Nationale de Cirque de Montréal, he graduated with a focus on double bar dance trapeze and hula hoops, as well as experience with a host of other skills including dance, acrobatics, handstands, acting and creation.

Oliver has been teaching circus alongside his training and performance for the last 9 years. He has taught in Australia, Canada, Germany, the UK and Ireland. Recent teaching highlights have included his first experience at the 2017 IADF and Berlin’s Luftartistik Festival last November. Here’s to the IADF 2018!
